There is nothing right about the Left in Malta and hardly anything left of the Right. I say this with a heavy heart. I saw a new Malta emerge from the black pits of the early 1980’s. It was not a perfect Malta but a normal one. Normal in the sense that the powers that be tried to do the right thing. They did not always succeed but they tried. And the people expected nothing else. They demanded nothing else. They wanted a government they could look up to but not a government that looked down on them. And for the good part of twenty-five years, they got exactly that.

Then something changed. Well, actually everything changed. Yes, the Nationalist Party is unrecognisable from the Party that dragged Malta from the proverbial bottom of the barrel. But it is not just the PN that changed.

The Labour Party is no longer a political party. It is a company within a Group of Companies. It is an ugly concoction of power and business that serves first and foremost its principals instead of its principles.

Despite a series of political scandals, the Labour government survived unscathed. The last four years in Malta defy political logic. They go against the law of political gravity. Labour government went up when it should have gone down.

What happened in Malta is politically illogical and can only be explained by how people’s expectations changed drastically. They say that the people get the government they deserve. Well, the people stopped wanting a government they could look up to. They want a government that they can look down on. In a country with low standards, everyone can make it. This is the Maltese version of the American dream. For those who still want to live in a normal country, this is not a dream. This is a nightmare.
