Joseph Muscat had said in 2013 he’d make Malta the best in Europe. In 2017 he said he’d put Malta on the world stage.
Oh but he has. The New York Times’s editorial is on Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination. It quotes Joseph Muscat’s promise to ensure her killers are brought to justice. But it is sceptical and it reminds Joseph Muscat and all the other politicians she criticised of the responsibility they share for her death:
“But the most fitting tribute to her work would be for leaders who purport to be democrats to denounce the demonization of journalists and to let reporters perform their essential democratic role without fear or harassment.”
That didn’t happen here. And Daphne Caruana Galizia was brutally executed, her blood splattered on the front pages of all newspapers of the world. And on the hands of our political class.
