The assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia should not be investigated by Minister Justyne Caruana’s husband. This is not just the unacceptably close political association. Nor even the revolting incest across institutions that should be independent of each other.

It is that we cannot realistically hope all leads are investigated with detachment while he is running the investigations, however honourable, well-meaning and sincere he may be.

I never met the man. For all I know he could be a warm and fuzzy Father Christmas in his private life.

But here we have an appointee of Joseph Muscat to the board of the FIAU, the anti-money-laundering unit of the government.

The FIAU is involved in deep in the worst scandals in the history of this Labour administration. The resignation of its director Manfred Galdes in circumstances that suggest political interference into investigations on crimes committed by politicians. The dismissal of its best investigator on spurious grounds when it looked like his skills might be used to click handcuffs around politicians’ wrists. The inexplicable spin around with the before and after reports on the investigation into Pilatus Bank. The failure of the police to bring to justice anyone involved in the flowing of dirty money between high-powered Azeris and high-powered Labour party politicians. Or their wives.

These are the stories Daphne Caruana Galizia investigated and revealed. These are the stories that forced Joseph Muscat to call an election a year ahead of time.

Silvio Valletta’s shadowy presence in the middle of all this was not missed by Daphne Caruana Galizia. See her post here overlaying Silvio Valletta’s (literal) marriage into Labour with his controlling role on the anti-money-laundering at the centre of what is turning out to be the most unashamed cover-up in our history.

We cannot get justice like this.
