The first rule of a crime scene investigation is to preserve the evidence.

But yesterday’s assassination is a microcosm of a bigger conspiracy. Daphne Caruana Galizia was the foremost investigator in the country. She uncovered malfeasance, graft, corruption and the organised crime that is around us. She published much but she published what could be proven or corroborated. Which means she knew more than she could say.

Many people will want the unpublished evidence that was in her possession destroyed. It’s in her papers, her phone records, her email accounts, her computers. Because what was in her head is gone for good.

She defended all that information with all her strength and she lost her life in the process. She was not fearless. She was afraid. But she did not let fear stop her.

Now, people we cannot trust, have their fingers all over that information.

Her last words to us in her blog are now immortal: “There are crooks everywhere you look now. The situation is desperate.”

Remember those words.
