ANDE, the non-partisan national Italian association which promotes active citizenship, social justice and political education, has awarded Premio Civitas 2018 to Daphne Caruana Galizia. The award citation says: “Daphne Caruana Galizia, European journalist in the service of the international community, forever an icon of truth and freedom knowing of the grave risks, who worked alone to serve the common good.”
The award is engraved with the words of the poet John Keats:
“When old age shall this generation waste,
Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe
Than ours, a friend to man, to whom thou say’st
‘Beauty is truth, truth beauty’, – that is all
Ye know on the earth, and all ye need to know.”
The presentation of the award took place in Nocera, Campania, in the presence of the president of the National Anti-corruption Authority Raffaele Cantone, the public prosecutor Antonio Centore, the president of the court Catello Marano, former magistrate Aldo De Chiara, Ottavio Lucarelli, president of the journalism association in Campania, and officials of the law enforcement authorities. ANDE President Gigliola Famiglietti said: “ANDE decided to award the prize to Daphne Caruana Galizia when we heard the news of her murder. Those responsible for her death are not only the hired killers and their mandators but also those who did not protect her and those who left her alone. What happened concerns a European citizen and so it concerns all of us. We are citizens and ANDE women, and we will never tire of asking for truth and justice for Daphne.”
The award of Premio Civitas 2018 concluded ANDE’s school project “Culture versus mafia, terrorism and corruption”, which involved schools at every level and of every age group. The students of the A Galizia Music School performed “La Ballata di Paolo Borsellino” and “Per Daphne”, two pieces composed specially for the occasion by former magistrate Aldo de Chiara.
The prize was collected by Daphne Caruana Galizia’s sister, Corinne Vella.
