Repubblika yesterday called for an investigation into suspicions Assistant Police Commissioner Ian Abdilla helped suspects dodge justice. The NGO also asked for his immediate dismissal.
Ian Abdilla’s testimony in court showed he was part of the corruption, inefficiency and the police leadership’s cooperation with criminals that has emerged to public awareness in recent months.
Whether out of incompetence, negligence or malicious intent Ian Abdilla failed in his duty to investigate corruption cases. He helped cultivate the impunity that killed Daphne Caruana Galizia.
After her killing, Ian Abdilla helped criminals avoid justice. This makes him as responsible as Joseph Muscat, Keith Schembri and others who like Ian Abdilla are yet to give account for themselves.
Ian Abdilla should be immediately dismissed from the police corps.
Repubblika called for the setting up of a competent team that is truly free of mafia infiltration with the job of acting against criminals who committed the corruption and money laundering which Ian Abdilla took pains to ignore. The team should also investigate the help given to the corrupt and to murderers by police officers like Ian Abdilla – and Lawrence Cutajar and Silvio Valletta. Action should be taken against these as well.
29 months since the killing of Daphne Caruana Galizia, our country still calls for justice while people like Joseph Muscat, Keith Schembri and Ian Abdilla gleefully move freely laughing at our expense.
