There’s no rhyme or reason in hatred. It is indiscriminate and perhaps most sadly of all, incurable. Pia Zammit and I yesterday stuck a poster by Ġorġ Mallia of Vladimir Putin’s bloodied hands to our office sign. We said we stood by Ukraine. I’d like to think most people should have no reason to disagree. But this morning the poster was ripped away by someone either particularly sympathetic to Vladimir Putin (which in downtown Mqabba is presumably not a regular occurrence) or someone who hates anything we say because we’re the ones saying it (which even in Mqabba does happen more often than you might think).

Roberta Metsola spoke for a near unanimous Parliament of 700 MEPs representing by direct ballot over 400 million people. She said she welcomed Ukraine’s application to join the EU. You wouldn’t think such a thing would ever be controversial in Malta and yet here’s a sample of two reactions to the quote.

The image I received has the identity of the first poster cropped out. But elsewhere on Facebook they are identified as one San Drin from Ħamrun.

Ms Drin makes an unkind aesthetic assessment of Roberta Metsola which I doubt will keep Robert Metsola up at night. Doreen Abdilla calls for her murder. That’s a different level of cruelty.

This is not because Roberta Metsola welcomes Ukraine’s application to join the EU. These people couldn’t find Ukraine on a map if Kiev was marked with blood stains. Ms Drin and Ms Abdilla watch One TV and they will never be cured of the hatred they have been poisoned with.
